چکیده

Microgravity combustion is fundamentally characterized by the absence of buoyancy driven flows. To facilitate a large range of diagnostics on microgravity flames, it is useful to create an equivalent microbuoyant condition in an earth-based laboratory. This experiment simulates microbuoyancy using electric fields to balance local convection in a region of the flame. Previous studies used N2 coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) temperature measurements to show that a region exists in which the temperature profile corresponds to that of a spherically symmetric diffusion profile, as would be expected in a true microgravity environment. The current study utilizes CARS thermometry and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) to examine the temperature and O2 concentration profiles in a region below the flame. The results show that the electrically balanced flame apparatus produces a spherically symmetric wedge of microbuoyant flame extending 10° from the vertical axis of the capillary flame arrangement; thereby quantifying the extent of the microbuoyant region. © 2003 The Combustion Institute. Hybrid femtosecond/picosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering for gas-phase temperature measurements

Hybrid femtosecond/picosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (fs/ps CARS) is employed for quantitative gas-phase temperature measurements in combustion processes and heated flows. In this approach, ultrafast 100-fs laser pulses are used to induce vibrational and rotational transitions in N2 and O2, while a third spectrally narrowed picosecond pulse is used to probe the molecular response...

Simultaneous high-speed measurement of temperature and lifetime-corrected OH laser-induced fluorescence in unsteady flames.

A means of performing simultaneous, high-speed measurements of temperature and OH lifetime-corrected laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) for tracking unsteady flames has been developed and demonstrated. The system uses the frequency-doubled and frequency-tripled output beams of an 80 MHz mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser to achieve ultrashort laser pulses (order 2 ps) for Rayleigh-scattering thermomet...

Flame Structure Studies of Neat and NH3-Doped H2/N20/Ar Flames by Laser-Induced Fluorescence, Mass Spectrometry, and Modeling

A combined experimental and modeling study of neat and NH3-doped (3>=1), 30-Torr flames is reported. The major species concentrations are measured by molecular beam mass spectrometry (MB/MS), whereas the minor species OH, NH, and O-atom concentrations are measured by laser-induced fluorescence (LEF). The species NO is measured both by LJF and MB/MS, and 02 by MB/MS. The flame temperatures are m...

A thermometry technique based on atomic lineshapes using diode laser LIF in flames

We report on the development of a novel diode laser thermometry technique permitting temperature measurements in flames based on the fluorescence lineshapes of an atomic tracer species. The technique, which we term OLAF (one-line atomic fluorescence) requires only a single diode laser source for excitation, is simple to implement, and has excellent spatial resolution. Temperatures are deduced f...
